What Are the Best Geothermal Heat Pump Brands?

geothermalLike any other item you can buy today, there are a plethora of companies manufacturing and selling geothermal heat pumps. All of them, of course, promise you that their particular brand of pump is the best on the market and will deliver unparalleled energy-efficiency and air comfort performance. Right, well, some of them will and some of them won’t and some of them you should stay away from. How do you evaluate a best brand? What should you be looking for? Here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind when looking over things at your dealer’s showcase:

1. What is the SEER? SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and is a measure of energy efficiency. A good rule of thumb is that the higher the SEER, the more the geothermal heat pump is going to save you on monthly energy expenditures. If the brand does not have a SEER listed, then check for EER or HSPF or COP. They all mean different things, but the higher they are the better the geothermal heat pump is going to perform.

2. What sort of compressor does the brand use? The industry standard is a scroll compressor and if the heat pump does not use that, then stay far away! Ideally, you want a brand that uses a two-stage scroll compressor. Those are even more efficient than a single-stage and is also going to have a longer operating life. It costs a bit more, but it is worth it.

3. How is the warranty coverage? You can get a good idea of how confident a company is in the quality of their geothermal heat pump brand by the kind of warranty protection you are going to get. In the current market, a 10-Year Limited Warranty is about average. You should look for that as the minimum. After all, some companies offer lifetime warranties on the compressor or entire unit replacement warranties for a number of years.

Keep those basic guidelines in mind and you should do fine evaluating geothermal heat pump brands.
