What Will I Need to Install a Geothermal System?

geothermal installMore and more every year, geothermal heat pumps are becoming the preferred energy-conscious air comfort choice for Americans. Geothermal units offer such cost savings and green benefits that compared to traditional air conditioner and furnace units it only makes good sense to transition to geothermal. With more and more people installing geothermal heat pumps, or becoming interested in doing so, the question very commonly arises: what will I need to install a geothermal system?

Well, what you are going to need for a geothermal heat pump installation is very much going to vary depending upon what kind of install you are doing. Obviously, you are going to need the geothermal heat pump unit itself, a thermostat for temperature control, and various pipes and valves to connect everything together. If you are upgrading, then chances are you already have ducts and vents in your house and most geothermal heat pump systems will work well with stuff already there.

Now, the biggest difference in what you need is going to depend on if you are getting an open or closed loop geothermal heat pump. With a closed loop you are going to need a lot more piping and will likely have to do a lot more digging. If you are putting in a horizontal closed loop, then you’ll almost certainly require a backhoe. If you are installing a vertical closed loop, it would be best to hire a company that digs wells as they are experienced with the kind of vertical shafts you’ll need for the system.

And then there are all sorts of extras you can get to fit out the system exactly the way you want it. There are many different and sophisticated thermostats on the market to give you precise control, desuperheaters if you want hot water from your geothermal heat pump, supplemental electric heat strips and more. There are lots of choices and the best way to make those choices is to get in contact with a dealer you trust. Then, you can pick the install best suited for your unique needs.
